The best ways to entertain your baby under three months old!

As a new mom, finding ways to entertain my newborn was challenging. Not only do babies so young not have a lot of skills, but they are easily overwhelmed and can grow tired quickly. Finding the perfect toys to not only entertain but also help develop necessary skills is essential! Also, having a happy baby makes your life much easier. After some trial and error as well as suggestions from my mom and sister (they are my go-to’s for baby questions!), I’ve rounded up my favorite items that will help entertain your baby under three months old.
All of these items can be found at buybuy BABY – both in-store and online! Something I love about buybuy BABY is that you can go in the store and ask literally any questions to their sales force and they will have an answer for you. They will give you the best tips and suggestions, and really are experts!
- Noise & Lights: Take Along Tunes // Happy Puppy
Around 2 – 2 1/2 months old, Lincoln started noticing lights and enjoying music. These toys are two of his absolute favorites! I would hold them in front of him and practice tracking (aka seeing if his eyes would follow the lights/noise). And now that he is 13 weeks old, he really loves reaching for them and trying to touch the lights. These toys are the perfect way for your child to develop different skills as he ages.
- Look: Fox // Elephant // Puppy
These soft and plush toys are some of the first things Lincoln looked at. They are colorful and have great contrasting colors. Babies LOVE contrasting colors because for a while it is all they can really see. Also, Lincoln loved looking at their eyes. I’m not sure why, but he was always drawn to toys that had big eyes to look at. I would put these toys above him in his activity mat so he could sit and stare. Eventually, he started having conversations with them and it was a great way for him to practice talking.
- Lay & Play: Activity Mat // Foam Tiles (also comes in black & white)
If you get one item for your baby, it MUST be this activity mat. Not only does it have the cutest interactive toys, but it can be used in so many ways for a really long time. It is definitely an item that will grow with your little one. First, it has a little dancing fox that is powered by noise. So when Lincoln “talks,” the fox dances around and he could stare at it for a long time. There is also a mirror! Lincoln also loves to look at himself in the mirror. And I don’t blame him because he is SO CUTE. But, the best thing about this activity mat is that the overhanging part can fold to the side. It is great for tummy time because babies can look at themselves in the mirror. And of course, these foam tiles make any surface soft and they are easy to wipe clean. I like this version because it has chic colors and you can arrange it into fun patterns.
- Touch: Book // Hand Rattles // Rings // Wonder Wheel
These toys are great when your baby gets closer to three months old. Lincoln started reaching for things around 10 weeks, and these are the items that really motivated him. The rings are great for putting in your baby’s hand and letting them grasp (even though they don’t know they are doing it). The hand rattles draw attention to their hands and lets them notice that they actually do have hands! And they are super cute. This wonder wheel may be Lincoln’s favorite toy of all time. He loves to reach out and spin the wheel, though I’m sure he isn’t exactly spinning it on purpose. But the contrasting colors draw his attention and he loves to stare at it.
