I am a handbag….”collector” (because hoarder sounds bad, right?). If I am going to splurge on any item in my closet, it will be a purse. Once I decide on a purse, I will keep it forever. So, if you are going to splurge on a purse, you need to store it properly to make sure it is well cared for and will last a lifetime.
My closet has been in need of a facelift, so I decided to start with my purse shelving. While this does not contain all of my bags, this area does contain a a great deal of them. Below is the before picture, and you can see that while it is mostly organized, it could use a little help.
I keep my larger satchels on the top shelf and my clutches and smaller bags on the bottom shelf.
With my larger bags, I like to stuff them so that they keep their shape and do not become flimsy or gather wrinkles in the leather. Below, you will see my orange Mulberry bag (similar here). In the first picture, it is a very sad bag without stuffing. I often use tissue paper, newspaper, bubble wrap, or even old (clean) towels to stuff my bags. On the right, you will see a much happier Mulberry because she is stuffed!
The same goes with my YSL bag (similar here). This bag will show wrinkles in the leather if it remains unstuffed. For her, I used an old towel that easily fits into the handbag. When the bag is completely stuffed, I zip it back up and buckle all of the hardware so the shape stays in perfect condition.
My Celine bag came to me very broken in and the leather is super supple and soft – which is amazing! However, she does not keep her shape very well, so I stuff her and lay her flat on the side so that she does not continue to slump over.
Some of my handbags work best laying flat. My Balenciaga bags are very slouchy and do not require stuffing, so I just lay them on top of each other for storage. I also have to keep Olive away from the tassels as she will attack them at any moment. My Chloe Marcie bag requires stuffing, but I think it would also be fine to lay her flat, too.
All of my satchels are happy and stuffed in the first picture! I stacked my clutches (mostly all Rebecca Minkoff, some Longchamp too) almost like books in the second and third pictures just so they are easy to see and grab. The last picture is the final product. Maybe it doesn’t look too different from the before, but at least I know my bags are stuffed and happy, and will hold their shape!
