Traveling is one of my favorite things to do, but actually getting to the location is something I struggle with! Packing and airplanes and scheduling and the stress give me major anxiety, and I really hate it! I’m always happy once we arrive at our destination, but I wish we could just blink and be there! Something that helps ease the stress of traveling for me is to plan ahead and pack appropriately. It has taken me some time to perfect my packing skills, so I wanted to share my tips with you!
- Make a Packing List: DUH! You guys, how often do you get to your destination and realize you forgot your toothbrush/socks/deodorant?! I was the queen of that when I was a teenager (one time I packed zero socks for a trip and I still hear about it!). I always try to start making a list of what I need, no matter how simple, at least a week in advance. I keep it on me so I can add to it whenever something new occurs to me.
- Pick your Packing Method: There are many ways to pack that people swear by, like the rolling method or packing with tissue paper. Personally, I only roll my clothing if I absolutely need the extra space, because more clothing = heavier bag = $$ at the airport. But if you aren’t traveling by air, roll away! I do pack using dust bags for my shoes and my purses, which helps protect them from scratching and scuffing.
- The Right Suitcase: Above anything else, I highly recommend a hard case suitcase! Having a hard case is so important for a few reasons. First, It helps me not over pack because it doesn’t stretch! Either my stuff fits or it doesn’t and there is no room for over-packing. Second, a hard case also holds up to airport wear and tear – we all know our bags get abused in the process. Finally, it won’t rip! Nothing is worse than having your suitcase eventually rip apart.
