Organizing spaces in my home is one of my favorite things to do when I have free time. I am ruthless when it comes to purging unessential items to make room for the necessities. However, between moving to Charlotte last May and planning a December wedding, our spare bedroom has become the dumping ground for all of the items we don’t have a specific place for. The room currently contains a closet (filled with clothes….I have a problem), both of our desks, a dresser, a spare television, a clothing rack, and most recently, Neil’s exercise monstrosity – aka the Power Tower. This week, I decided to tackle part of the spare bedroom and whip it into shape. My ultimate goal is to make it a chic office space, but we will take one step at a time. I have documented the before, during, and after pictures to give you some insight into my organization process.
The awful before picture. As you can see, my desk has been overtaken by wedding planning materials (among other things), but I will be tackling my desk next week! Initially, I only had a few items to hang on the spare clothing rack, but it soon became overrun by multiple blazers, button-ups, and shirts and I just needed more space.
In order to give myself more organizational options, such as shelving, I purchased this amazing free-standing closet. It has two clothing racks as well as four mini-shelves, which are perfect for storage boxes, and a large upper shelf for boxes, shoes, bags, etc. As I transitioned clothing from one rack to another, I purged a handful of non-essential items. I knew that I no longer needed the 10 striped button up blouses because I had not worn them in about two years. Sometimes, it is hard to let go of clothing because you “might need them someday,” but I often find that “someday” never comes around. I would recommend finding a consignment boutique in your area or donating more worn-out items.
I decided to purchase some cute storage boxes (similar here and here) so I could put my scarf collection in a more easily accessible place since the bedroom closet is crammed with other items. The storage boxes add not only a great hidden storage solution, but add a touch of color and style to the shelving. Being surrounded by style helps you to pick out more stylish outfits, right?
In addition to removing some old posters from the wall, I also added some cork lining to the top of the shelf so I could easily put shoes and other accessories on top without them falling through the wire rack.
And the final product!
Having this clothing rack will allow me to easily access my clothes, accessories, and shoes so I will always know what I have and what I do (or do not) need!
